December Highlights in Joburg


December isn’t just a month in South Africa, it’s a lifestyle. And what better way to immerse yourself into the festive season than to celebrate diversity, entertaining the kids (or the kid in you), shopping a Christmas market, or laughing until your stomach aches. Here are 10 of the best events taking place in Jozi this month.

Afropunk Fest


For over 15 years, AFROPUNK has been defining culture in the music world – a triumph of multiculturalism and diversity for people of all races, genders, colours, creeds and tastes. Afropunk presents a host of both national and international artists to end off the year. Lineup includes Solange Knowles, Laura Mvula, King Tha VS BLK JKS, Theo Parrish, Black Motion and others.

dead yellow sands


Graham Weir performs a one-man show, portraying a collection of portraitures that live for a brief few minutes and then return to the darkness of black space. Based on people Weir has met or observed over the years, the characters are all at a winding-down moment in their lives, some of them even looking into the silence of death.

Documentary photographer Cornell Tukiri relives the history of the historic Sophiatown through his solo exhibition, Uprooted. The work gives a voice to the people who once lived and worked in the area, but were forcefully removed after the Group Areas Act was enforced under apartheid.

Christmas Village


The fourth annual Christmas Village is great for the whole family, mimicking a traditional European Christmas market. Guests can find colourful stalls stocked with handcrafted gifts, decorations and edible treats right in time for the festive season. Catch the carols and outdoor movies played on the big screen, too.

Cinderella on Ice


The world-famous Imperial Ice Stars, who have won international critical acclaim and five-star reviews with their previous tours of The Sleeping Beauty on IceThe Nutcracker on Ice, and Swan Lake on Ice, are set to entertain South African audiences once more with their latest production, Cinderella on Ice.

Michael Jackson Tribute


French entertainer Michael Jonathan presents his tribute to the late pop-king, Michael Jackson. After having performed his acclaimed tribute at renowned places like the Eiffel Tower, Moulin Rouge and Champs Elysees, Jonathan has made his way to South Africa to perform classics such as ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Wanna Be Starting Something’ and ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’.

Comedian Tips/Shampoonaiza hosts his own premier stand up comedy show featuring some of South Africa’s funniest and most established comedians such as Roby Collins, Gavin Kelly, Kagiso Lediga and more. DJ Tzee is set to provide music entertainment for the evening as well.

national youth orchestra


The South African National Youth Orchestra performs live, and is conducted by Sarah Ioannides from the USA. The programme includes Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Fourth Symphony and Stravinsky’s beautiful Pulcinella Suite.

a piece of work


A group exhibition of variations of the monotype process and other works on paper contributed by a selection of invited artists, collaborations with the David Krut Workshop and its team members. The phrase “a piece of work” can be defined as a product or creation of work but also a complicated, eccentric or unique character or something that is crazed and bizarre, yet intriguingly charming.

Written and directed by Janice Honeyman, the theatre performance of Pinocchio is part of the 30th annual festive season pantomime production. The story tells of Geppetto’s son, Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who is desperate to become a real boy. Starring Tobie Cronjé, André Schwartz, Chi Mhende, and Kanyi Nokwe as Pinocchio.
