March Highlights in Joburg


March brings with it bunnies, eggs and probably way too much chocolate. But apart from eating to your heart’s content, what else is there to do in Joburg this month? We’ve rounded up 10 of our favourite events.

The Sound of Music


Pieter Toerien, David Ian and The Really Useful Group present the much-loved musical, telling the story of the Von Trapp family’s flight across the mountains from Austria. With its unforgettable score, The Sound of Music includes some memorable songs: “My Favourite Things”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “The Sound of Music” and more. Featuring an all-star South African cast back from their international tour.

Muddy Princess


A 5km mud fun run for ladies, filled with plenty of obstacles waiting to be conquered. Attendees can crawl, walk, run, climb and play through the course. Entering as an individual or as a team is optional.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch


Starring Paul du Toit and Genna Gallowa, Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the story of a transgender singer from East Berlin. The production is an innovative, heart-breaking and comedic musical sensation, and the audience is swept along with the emotions of Hedwig’s life events. Directed by Elizma Badenhorst.

Dance Umbrella Festival


The premier platform of South African contemporary choreography and dance celebrates its 30th anniversary. Funded by the National Lotteries Commission, the internationally renowned festival presents 18 programmes of new contemporary dance works from both local and international choreographers.

Legends Live


The Live Series presents: Legends Live, a stand-up comedy special featuring four of South Africa’s comedians. See Mel Miller, Joe Parker, Eddie Eckstein and Mark Banks each perform a comedic set in front of a live theatre audience.

Peppa Pig


The children’s cartoon Peppa Pig brought to life through puppetry. Based on the award-winning television series, the show is especially designed to give young fans a first live theatre experience. A fully immersive musical production, it features a dozen familiar and original songs, as well as an interactive sing-a-long.

Jeremy Loops Park Acoustics


The monthly Park Acoustics returns with a brand new lineup of music and comedy. The main stage features live performances by Jeremy Loops, Adelle Nqeto, Bam Bam Brown, Native Young, TRESOR and David and Goliath.

Royal Moscow Ballet


The Royal Moscow Ballet returns to South Africa to present a tribute to the Russian composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The performance is split into two acts: Act I, Serenade, a one-act ballet choreography by Anatly Emelianov; and Act II, Black Pas De Deux from the ballet Swan Lake.

Chant tells a personal story, journeying from the suburbs of Alberton to the squatter camp in Phola Park during the 80s and 90s. The play is written and performed by Nhlanhla Mahlangu, directed by Gerard Bester and designed by Thando Lobese Moropa.

Jan Hugo Piano


The Brooklyn Theatre hosts pianist Jan Hugo for the first time. Hugo performs a recital programme ranging from impressionists to romantic piano works.
