A lyric tragedy, and yet a leading example of the bel canto genre, is performed in Italian with English subtitles.
Norma became justly famous as a result of the first act prayer for soprano – Casta Diva, sung by sopranos like Callas, Sutherland and Montserrat Caballé.
Ilze Coetzee, who sang several leading roles, sings the title role in Norma. Italian tenor, Filippo Adami from Florence, takes on the role of Pollione. The role of Adalgisa is sung by Ané Pretorius. The bass, Thomas Mohlamme sings the role of Oroveso.
