November means the festive season is almost upon us. And with the sun rising earlier and setting later, there are more hours in the day to explore Jozi and surrounds. Here are 10 of the best events to get yourself to this month.

KNOT I : I KNOT

Marlene Steyn’s new exhibition of paintings and ceramic sculptures is a play on Not I – a short dramatic monologue written in 1972 by Samuel Beckett. Steyn’s characteristically elongated, distorted figures bend and twist in yoga-like positions, often writhing and transmuting into the sporting goods by which their actions are accompanied.

The Suitcase

THE SUITCASE

The Market Theatre’s production returns following a sold-out season during a five-week tour of the UK. Directed by James Ngcobo, The Suitcase is adapted from the short story Es’kia Mphahlele –  a love story about a young couple who, despite family disapproval of their marriage, leave for the city, intending to return wealthy and immune from social censure. However, the pressures of the city, unemployment and poverty strip away the husband’s self-esteem and he starts to lose his moral compass.

Evita The Musical

EVITA THE MUSICAL

Pieter Toerien and David Ian present the original West End and Broadway production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical. Starring Emma Kingston, Jonathan Roxmouth, Robert Finlayson and others, the production features some of the most loved songs in musical theatre, including “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”, “On This Night of a Thousand Stars”, “Oh What a Circus”, “High Flying” and more.

Almost Human

ALMOST HUMAN – HOMO NALEDI EXHIBITION

Maropeng’s current exhibition space, Almost Human, tells the story of the discovery of the Rising Star Cave and the Homo Naledi fossils in 2015. On display at the exhibition are the fossils that were discovered, including Homo naledi – an extinct species of hominid. Admission to the Almost Human is included in the standard Maropeng ticket.

Gloria Campaner

JPO WORLD SYMPHONY SERIES WITH GLORIA CAMPANER

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra presents its World Symphony Series, a four week programme with various featured artists and conductors. This particular week features pianist Gloria Campaner and conductor Justus Frantz, with the evening’s programme including Mendelssohn’s concert overture ‘The Hebrides’, Schumann’s Piano Concerto, and Brahms’s Symphony no 2.

LEXI AT JACKSON’S

Plant-based chef and healthy food advocate Lexi Monzeglio takes over the kitchen at Jackson’s Real Food Market. She hosts a plant-based culinary experience where she takes her guests through her idea of Summer in five courses.

ONESIGHT ACOUSTICS: TRESOR

OneSight Acoustics presents a series of music events in Joburg and Cape Town geared towards raising funds for OneSight – an organisation which provides sustainable access to quality vision care and eyewear in underserved communities worldwide. Congolese-born singer/songwriter Tresor headlines this event, with live performances by BCUC, Johnny Cradle and Half n Half featuring as well.

Open Water Festival

The Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup is one of the province’s most prestigious annual sporting events, combining horse-racing with a fun, family-oriented day out. While the focus is on the horse races, the event is packed with entertainment for the whole family including a carnival with mechanical rides, face painters, buskers and live entertainment.
