Soweto’s biggest monthly poetry showcase, Poetic Thursdays, now partnered with Soweto Theatre.
On the last Thursday of every month, these sessions are led by artists, namely: Odi Blaqsmyth, I am Kwaito, Scotty Llyod, Gaddafi and Ms Isis.
He made his name through performing at the University of Johannesburg Theatre and became one of the residents of a weekly production, with multiple appearances on UJ Radio owing to his electrifying theatrical delivery. Over the years he has fine-tuned his style and aesthetic in the Joburg poetry scene. He fuses spoken-word with theatre; with some scenes acted out and multiple props to accentuate and further articulate his art.
I am Kwaito
A resident DJ, designer and stylist at one of Jozi’s spots; Kitchener’s Carvery Bar. In the past year, he has launched a clothing range accompanied by a series of mixes and music productions that propelled him into touring and hosting events throughout Johannesburg. He has had critical reviews from many credible media sources.
Due to the release of his debut EP that has been recorded live; this established vocalist has featured on the country’s biggest gospel choir competition, Clash of the Choirs, alongside his mentor and friend, renowned vocalist Kelly Khumalo. He is the host of The Live Hive with Scotty Lloyd powered by Bannister Hotel in Braamfontein; an annual live music concert.
With over ten thousand followers on his social media, including Instagram and YouTube, he is a regular feature on Thobela FM and also recently launched his book, Next Level. He performs on South Africa’s biggest poetry stages.
Born in PE with a passion for music, she spent most of her childhood surrounded by jazz records and her parents’ vocals. She fuses rap and soul with a jazzy perspective, having studied jazz at the University of Cape Town. She has performed in PE, Tshwane and Jozi at spots like Gondwana, House 22, State Theatre, Zen and Joburg Culinary School. She features on SABC 1’s Sisters and Brother’s with Soul and is due to release South Africa’s s first female-only produced beat tape.
