Pulane, a woman who is raised by her grandmother, the village healer.
Her mother, who lives in Europe and is married to a white man, supports the grandmother and Pulane financially. She insists that Pulane attend a Model C school in the city, but at school Pulane must adopt a city lifestyle, and this often goes against the teaching of her grandmother. The story is about the choices that Pulane makes as she reaches maturity. It explores female identity and heritage.
