HectorHector Pieterson became the subject of an iconic image of the 1976 Soweto uprising when a photograph of the dying teenager being carried by another student while his sister ran next to them, was published around the world. He was killed when the police opened fire on students who were protesting against the implementation of Afrikaans and English as the dual medium of instruction for black secondary school.
