The Voortrekker Monument is situated in a nature reserve and commemorates the pioneer history of South Africa and the history of the Afrikaner.
Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country. This massive granite structure is prominently located on a hilltop, and was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers (Afrikaans pioneers) who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854 and who brought their culture with them to the interior of Southern Africa.
The monument site also often plays host to events such as Park Acoustics, a music festival held the last Sunday of each month, which has seen local and international acts such as Dan Platansky, Matthew Mole, The Kongos, aKing, Shortstraw as well as various markets and fairs.
Visitors can either visit the heritage site, take a game drive through the nature reserve, have a picnic or do outdoor activities such as horse riding, bird watching, cycling, running and hiking trails.
