Ludwig’s Rose Farm

Ludwig’s Roses, established in 1971 by Ludwig Taschner, is a specialist nursery that has grown from small beginnings to become the strongest rose brand in South Africa. The “mother” nursery, north of Pretoria, is a spectacle of more than 1 000 roses in full bloom. Today, with more than 25 breeders from all over the world working with him, Taschner annually tests thousands of new varieties to see how they withstand our local climate. From these, a selection of new varieties is named and released every year.

Attractions besides the roses include the Spiced Coffee Restaurant, which serves breakfasts, light lunches, tea and cake and has a large playground located nearby, making it ideal for both parents and children. Other features also include a butterfly garden enclosed in a greenhouse on the farm where visitors can walk among the butterflies, as well as The Thorns ‘n Things boutique shop which stocks all things rosy.

Taschner, always willing to share his knowledge and passion for roses, offers talks and hosts annual events. These include summer, winter and finger-pruning demonstrations as well as soil and planting workshops.
