Bruma Lake ParkJohannesburg Mayor Parks Tau unveiled the new Bruma Lake, which has now been converted to a park – the result of the rehabilitation project that started in 2014. The lake, affectionately known as the Jewel of the East, had previously become infamous for its high levels of pollution and contamination.

The first phase of reconstruction included draining the lake and drying the silt. From there, the Jukskei River was diverted from the centre of the lake, giving way to the construction of the channel. Once that was complete, the final landscaping touches were made.

Members of the Mayoral Committee, CoJ officials, community members and business owners attended the unveiling, with the restoration set to improve the community standard for locals and tourists alike, as well as boost business confidence in the area.

“It is important to invest in such projects because it gives communities a sense of pride and Bruma Lake Park is all about restoring the community’s pride,” said Clr Tau.

The rehabilitated and environmentally friendly park now consists of a lake, park and the iconic bridge.
