Drink a beer and save a penguin. Sound good?
Local beer aficionados Boston Breweries have partnered up as a beneficiary with SANCCOB – the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. Look out for the round stickers on each bottle of Boston Breweries Rock Hoppa craft beer, which promise that for every bottle sold, R1 will be given to SANCCOB.
Rocky the Northern Rockhopper penguin is possibly the most loveable brand ambassador in the world. Caught in the nets of a fishing trawler, she was fortunate enough to be brought to SANCCOB for rehabilitation. SANCCOB is an internationally recognised conservation organisation, responsive to seabird rescue and rehabilitation along the southern African coastline. Their unremitting efforts to rescue stricken birds and release them in their natural environment gets publicity during oil spill crises, but in fact SANCCOB is dependent on funding year round.
Boston Breweries, one of the Cape’s longest standing and most prestigious craft breweries has just added Rock Hoppa beer to their series of great craft beers. Managing Director Chris Barnard is a man of the sea, renowned for swimming to Robben Island using only butterfly stroke. While Rock Hoppa beer was named initially for the strong hops presence in the brew, Chris realised that his love for nature, the sea, and his beer had a great synergy: enter SANCCOB, Rocky and a great partnership.
