Bookseller, poet and activist Thabiso Mthimkhulu offers a walking tour of booksellers in the Johannesburg CBD.
The walk starts at the Bridge Books store and meanders through Joburg’s historic district. Walkers visit the Joubert Street market, home to many of the 70-plus booksellers in the CBD as well as De Strong Tower, importers of Nigerian chapbooks. There are also spaza shops, religious shops, sidewalk vendors and fashion boutiques- which all sell books too.
The tour offers a unique understanding of Joburg’s history through books.
Tours operate Wednesdays to Saturdays weekly. Private tours can also be arranged.
