Ideas For A Magical Date Night At Home

Whether you have date nights every other day or once a week; the same old routine can get quite boring. While the country slowly re-opens for business, date night at home remains an occasion worth prioritising and there’s no need for it to fall to the wayside. If you’re looking for something different, take a look at our list below of how to spice up date night from the comfort of your home.

There’s nothing more memorable than kickstarting a special evening with flowers that are farm fresh, on-trend and affordable.

Petal&Post gathers the freshest seasonal blooms from Cape Town and Johannesburg’s local surrounding farms and creates a unique arrangement that will be available for one week only. A picture of the Posy of the day is posted at 7am each morning on their website, Instagram and Facebook pages. The Posies can be upsized to Double Posy or Triple Posy, pre-ordered in advance, and topped up with treats such as handcrafted chocolate, scented candles, locally made hand cream and a variety of beautiful gift sets.

Orders for same-day delivery of the Posies are open until 1 pm, and delivered by their in-house delivery team, formed of part-time students in central suburbs of the Mother City and Johannesburg. Petal&Post have made flower and gift delivery affordable, very convenient, and, most of all, uncomplicated.

Petal&Post’s unique business model was founded by Kim du Plessis while working in Australia, where she attended a floristry night course. In 2018, she was offered a spot at the UCT Graduate School of Business incubation programme ‘MTN Solution Space’, which provided a wonderful opportunity for growth and business mentorship. In February 2020 she opened a second branch in Joburg’s trendy 44 Stanley complex.

Head over to their website to have a look at today’s posy, and the range of gift sets available to surprise your loved one.

Looking for a lockdown date night idea with an imaginative twist? Detour! is the first in ImmersiveXP’s Departure Lounge Adventure Series. This 2.5-hour virtual experience can be played alone or with your partner. For a dose of healthy competition, you can challenge another couple to also take part, then call video call them afterwards to laugh about it.

You’ll be taken on a trip via Zoom where you can join in fun activities, solve puzzles, and have a laugh. A great social activity to do during lockdown while brushing up on some general knowledge.

The game is also a perfect opportunity for your next family get-together. Why not break your household into teams and verse each other from different rooms? The results will be hilarious and help in creating new memories. Detour! can also be played by corporates looking for new ways of team-building whilst working from home.

For the What’s on in Joburg team, no date night is complete without catching the latest theatre, opera, or live gig before or after a romantic dinner. That’s still possible for us and other lovers of the arts with the National Arts Festival usually hosted annually in Grahamstown. Instead, the 2020 edition is going virtual, making it possible for you to enjoy and support some of our thriving arts and culture community from the comfort of your home.

Although the 11-day online festival is over, tickets can still be bought to view most of the show-stopping live and pre-recorded productions, short films, virtual art exhibitions, jam sessions, interactive events, webinars and more, from the South African and international art scene.

Look out for Standard Bank Jazz Festival performances from Gloria Bosman, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Michael Bester, along with Qondiswa James’ topical theatre production which touches on identity, racism, and teen pregnancy within the enclave of an elite all-girls boarding school. As usual, the festival included some stunning tricks up their sleeve. This year’s dark horses were Bru & Boegie: The Movie, South Africa’s first full-length 2D animation movie, and Anton Krueger’s brave foray into digital arts with the live Zoom show The Voice in Your Head uncovering an understanding of mindfulness.

There is also a pay-per-view platform available, where you can buy tickets to view works by a wide range of artists.

Visit the virtual National Arts Festival website for a full scope of what’s still on offer. Bookings are made directly on the website’s online store.

Cost: Full Festival Pass – R600 | Jazz Festival Pass – R500 | Day Pass – R80 | Some shows are free
