Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a Bold Return to Visually-Rich Animation Filmmaking

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently making global waves thanks to the ballsy move to propose an animated superhero film and the much-anticipated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Moviegoers can expect even more groundbreaking visual styles that play on the comic book aesthetic developed for the first film, as our heroes visit several different dimensions and meet new characters with their own unique look and feel.

The plot

The story continues from where the first film left off, with Miles Morales continuing his journey as Spider-Man and exploring different dimensions and meeting new characters and storylines.

The film is set in the Spider-Man multiverse and follows the adventures of Miles Morales, a young Spider-Man from an alternate universe. Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

A fresh approach to modern filmmaking

Director Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson crafted this deep dive into the Spider-Verse with Sony Pictures Animation in collaboration with Marvel Studios.

Belson mentions that the talented group of artists and technicians both at Sony Pictures Animation and at Sony Pictures Imageworks challenged themselves every minute of the day to take the sequel to new visual heights.

‘What has been so much fun is to try to top what we did with the visual style in the first movie, which included incorporating 2D elements that paid homage to the graphical look of comic books. In the sequel, we venture further out across the Spider-Verse and that gives us new opportunities to explore different styles of animation and to create memorable visual settings that went beyond what we did in the original film,’ says Sony Pictures Animation’s President Kristine Belson.
