Headliner: Legendary US comedian Eddie Griffin

American comedian Eddie Griffin, who is popularly known for his hit sitcom ‘Malcolm and Eddie,’ is also famous for his electrifying stage presence and unique style. Eddie is set to headline the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival this year, performing on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

With a career spanning numerous stand-up specials and over 50 film appearances, Eddie’s stand-up shows promised to bring his signature sharp comedic wit and unapologetic storytelling style to the South African stage.

Ladies Night: Celeste Ntuli, Mel Jones, Chantal Jaxx (aka Jaxx Justice) & Nonto R

Some of the best female comedians in South Africa are coming together for Ladies Night on Friday, 5 April. Join Celeste Ntuli, Nonto R, and Chantal Jaxx (aka Jaxx Justice)  for an evening of unapologetic humour. Your MC for the evening is award-winning comedian, writer, and radio presenter, Mel Jones.

Celeste Ntuli is a household name thanks to her stint as an actress in the popular series Isibaya and Lockdown. She has won many awards including a SAFTA (South African Film and Television Award), a Golden Horn award, and a Comedy G Award, and her stand-up show ‘Black Tax’ played to sold-out audiences.

Nonto R is known for incorporating Zulu culture into her comedy routines and holds two Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards 2023 for Breakthrough Act of the Year and the Joe Mafela Award, as well as the title of Best Indigenous Comedian through SATMA.

Leaving even the most staunch audience members in stitches, Chantal Jaxx has performed alongside giants such as Barry Hilton and Marc Lottering with fearlessness.

No comedy festival is complete without a no-holes-bared celebrity roast. This year, popular actress and style icon Minnie Dlamini will be at the receiving end of some wicked but ultimately good-natured banter for The Showmax Roast of Minnie Dlamini.

At the Roast Master helm are comedy heavyweights Tumi Morake and Jason Goliath who will ensure that the jests and jabs hit nowhere else but below the belt. As a first at a comedy festival, Laugh Africa is introducing an exclusive stage for social media comics, where popular social media comedy sensations will join the traditional stand-up acts, by adding a chuckle or two to the lineup. The stage is proudly, and aptly, sponsored by Chuckles.

One of the social media comedians for the festival this year is Dalin Oliver, an international and award-winning South African radio sports broadcaster and podcaster. The Cape Town-based former teacher turned laughter specialist is running daily shows throughout the festival that boast a clean-cut, energetic and charming brand of comedy that will connect with people from all walks of life.

Gauteng’s favourite has been raking in the laughs in Soweto, Centurion, Tembisa, Mellville, and more. Skhumba Hlope appeared on TV shows like Tandeka’s Diary and currently hosts the popular daily Drive Show on KayaFM with Thomas Msengana from Mondays to Fridays.

He’s also featured on The Masked Singer, and a Netflix movie called A Soweto Love Story. Boasting three Savanna Comic Choice Awards (Flying Solo Category, winner for 2016 and 2017 and Comic of the Year for 2017) and the DSTV MVCA Favourite Comedian in 2018, the Skhumba show at Laugh Africa Comedy Festival is one to diarise.
