Mzansi Ballet Presents The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe

Following its acclaimed premiere in 2023 in Pretoria and rave reviews at the Baxter Theatre in February, The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe, presented by Mzansi Ballet, is coming to Fourways Mall on 10 and 11 May.

Commissioned by The South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC), this ballet production is both a cultural and visual masterpiece. Expect stunning costumes by famous South African fashion designer David Tlale and set design by the award-winning creative, Andrew Botha.

A mythical, ancient world comes to life

With innovative choreography by the talented Angela Revie and Mdu Nhlapo, this dynamic work is a wonderful fusion of classical and afro-ballet. The contemporary dance is enhanced by poetic narration in parts, and the stirring score combines the work of a group of prolific artists – including three compositions by the double Grammy-Award-winning flautist, producer and composer Wouter Kellerman. Other notable composers include musical arranger and director Mark Cheyne, co-composers SJ Khosa, Dr Cara Stacey, Matthijs van Dijk, and indigenous music specialist Mpho Molikeng.

The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe Ballet narrates a powerful storyline, connecting the mythical world, ancient civilization and modern society. It highlights a 1,000-year-old lost civilization and a 100-year-old archaeological discovery entangled with colonial politics.

Special matinee shows for school outings

This production holds strategic national and continental importance, aligning with South African school curricula. Matinee dates and times have been included to accommodate school schedules, encouraging block bookings for educational purposes. The goal of Mzansi Ballet is to annually bring this cultural narrative to schools across South Africa, inspiring youth to appreciate the richness of their heritage.

Mzansi Ballet’s cultural mission through movement

Mzansi Ballet comprises both South African and international dancers. This unique dance company, founded by Dirk Badenhorst, identifies and cultivates young South African talent, and creates performances that authentically convey South African stories while respecting the cultural and historical aspects of classical ballet. Mzansi Ballet’s core mission is to nurture artistic expression, foster cultural appreciation, and engage communities through the art of dance.

Other notable productions by Mzansi Ballet include Benghazi, When Ballet Meets Jazz, The Queen Show, The ABBA Show, The Christmas Show, and Swan Lake.

How Mzansi Ballet School was formed

The Mzansi Ballet School (comprising Recreational and Vocational divisions) and the Mzansi Ballet Junior Company aim to provide young South Africans with access to high-quality ballet and dance training, as well as the opportunity to perform alongside a professional company.

“Fourways Mall is so proud to be part of this innovative and passion-filled show,” says Maria Varfis, Head of Marketing at Fourways Mall. “During lockdown, the mall committed itself to supporting arts and artists by offering a platform for dancers to do what they love most and share their expertise with eager students, that had been affected by extra murals being cancelled or closed – all in a safe and accessible environment. The classes began with 15 students in the middle of the mall and have now grown to a fully-fledged school, within its very own space, offering a diverse range of classes across all ages. It has been overwhelming to watch the remarkable evolution of the Mzansi Ballet School and make dance accessible to the community. The school is managed and owned by Director Dirk Badenhorst, Producer of The Queen Show – now showcasing at Fourways Mall. We are so excited to be hosting this exceptional show, set to entertain all ages.”
