The Boesmanskloof Trail is a 28km hiking route through the Riviersonderend Mountains, linking the towns of McGregor and Greyton in the Robertson Karoo region. Known for its rugged mountain scenery, it features waterfalls, large rock pools, and diverse flora, including proteas and ericas. Wildlife sightings may include klipspringers, duikers, baboons, and a variety of bird species such as malachite sunbirds and black eagles.
The trail can be hiked as a 14km one-way route or a 28km out-and-back trek, with hikers commonly overnighting in Greyton or McGregor. Starting points include Die Galg, 14km south of McGregor, and a jeep track near Greyton. Highlights along the route include Oakes Falls, a series of waterfalls and pools ideal for swimming.
The hike is moderately strenuous, requiring good fitness and preparation. Summer temperatures can be extreme, while winters are cold and wet. Permits are required, and the trail is limited to 50 hikers per day. Overnight camping, fires, and dogs are prohibited. Accommodation options are available in both towns, with private facilities at Die Galg.
Contact CapeNature for reservations and permits. Hikers should carry water, be equipped for changing weather, and respect the protected flora and fauna of the conservation area.
