Event information
Fundani Tours provides tours ranging from village and community tours to beer tastings and pub crawls. Their Cullinan Mine is the home of the Cullinan Diamond 3106, the world’s largest diamond. This is not the only impressive statistic boasted by the mine, it has also produced a quarter of the world’s gem diamonds of 400 or more carats.
The Cullinan mine tour is split into two, the surface tour and the underground tour. The surface tour of the mine takes visitors through the shaft, the famous big hole, and allows them to view a diamond room displaying replicas of world-famous diamonds and various uncut diamonds. After gearing up with safety clothes, guests then travel 763 meters underground to encounter a real mining experience, the offices, workshops and rest areas. They can also observe the ore being tipped, crushed, and transported.
Guests preferring a less physically intensive adventure will prefer the beer tasting, where they can enjoy various craft beers and lagers from Germany, England and America. Alternatively, a pub crawl can be booked to socialise with locals and explore the town until the early morning.
Keeping with the mining theme, Fundani offers a community tour of Refilwe, The Diamond People. This tour is an opportunity to see how the locals and families of the miners live. The tour visits the community hall, hostels, informal settlements and taverns and treats you to the local cuisine and a consultation with a witch doctor.
Due to mine laws, tours of the Cullinan Mine are only offered to those aged 10 years and above. Comfortable clothing with closed shoes is recommended.
