The inaugural Ikasi Poetry Musiq Video Competition is a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry of Cape Town's townships, with a focus on spoken word poetry.
Poets and spoken word artists from in and around Cape Town are invited to submit short (+/- 1 minute) videos of their work in any language. These videos will then be showcased for an audience at an event hosted by rising young poet and filmmaker Zolani Balekwa.
The audience members can vote for their favourite entry, with a prize for the winner of a professionally shot poetry video.
Langa, a vibrant township in Cape Town named after King Langalibalele, is set to commemorate its centenary this year. In honour of this, the theme of the competition is "Langa 100: 1923-2023." To commemorate this milestone, poets are invited to delve into the history and heritage of Langa, researching and crafting poems that capture the essence of historical incidents and celebrations that have shaped this community.
Entry for poets is free - just register by contacting Zolani. Tickets for poetry enthusiasts and other interested parties are just R30 via Webtickets.
