Klerksdorp Museum

The Klerksdorp Museum is housed in a number of buildings. The main museum (a former prison) is a sandstone building completed in 1891, and features archaeology, cultural history, farm implements and animal drawn vehicles.

There are period exhibitions in an adjacent Warden's House, as well as regular rotating temporary exhibitions that are housed throughout the museum. Exhibits also depict early town life, social history and local geological history. Artefacts on display include a halve-hooded ox wagon used as transport people to ‘nagmaal' (communion).

In 2011 the museum started to upgrade some of its exhibitions to keep in touch with developments in the museum world. The first one to be completed was the City of Matlosana Exhibition that gives an overview of the cultural heritage of all of the people of the city. The current mission of the museum is to transform imagery regarding heritage in the City of Matlosana: formerly known as Klerksdorp.
