The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere and among the largest in the world.
Funded by a consortium of international partners from South Africa, the United States, Germany, Poland, India, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the telescope has been in full science operation since 2011 as Africa’s Giant Eye on the Universe.
With so many people coming to see the South Africa Large Telescope (SALT) a local farmer, Nicol van der Merwe, came up with the idea of building a world-class planetarium in Sutherland. The 30-seater Planetarium is open 7 days a week showcasing a wide range of 3-D Fulldome films to ensure educational entertainment for the whole family.
