South End Museum

Event information

It is devoted to the history and impact of Apartheid on the South End community of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The museum commemorates the heyday of the suburb before it was destroyed by the Apartheid government.

This microcosm of cosmopolitan city life was destroyed during the 1970's under the infamous Group Areas Act, and the site immerses visitors into the lives, cultures, challenges and victories of those that experienced this tragedy first hand.

From its walk-on street map, to historical photographs and displays of the life and times of the people of South End, the museum provides a living memorial to the victims who were forcibly removed.
