An opera about a gypsy who is determined to live life on her own terms – whatever her fate may be.

Sempre Opera, founded in 2011, in collaboration with Joburg Theatre, announces its upcoming production of Carmen by George Bizet. This piece blends passion, seduction, jealousy, betrayal and even a little law-breaking. The desperate young soldier Don José is led astray from his village life and love, the village girl Micaëla, as he chases the gypsy, Carmen. Her seduction and charms lead Don José into obsession and ruin when she leaves him for the bullfighter, Escamillo.

Directed by well-known baritone Danie Verster, Carmen features the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra and the Armonia Theatre Chorus, under the baton of Schalk van der Merwe. Voices include Linette van der Merwe, Stéfan Louw, Christian Bester, Lauren Dasappa, Marina Botha-Spies, Ailyn Nienaber, Loralee Songer, Chris Mostert, Walter Fourie and Lourens de Jager.
