Everard Read presents ‘Co-Respondences’, an exhibition by Deborah Bell and Ricky Burnett.
Co-Respondences marks the first showing of a major sculptural work in an explicitly public register and additionally marks a collaborative – or more properly a co-curatorial venture. Two artists of more than considerable standing and tenure come and work together.
Bell’s works are possessed of a profoundly spiritual decorum.Over the last couple of decades, as her work has increasingly moved into this realm of spirit and the figurations of mythology, her position has come to be consolidated in the top rank of South Africa’s living artists.
As teacher, curator, gallerist, dealer, cultural interventionist, fund administrator, public intellectual, critic and as a painter himself Ricky Burnett never deviates from an overriding concern with abstract and formal values in art. He maintains a conviction that art opens into zones of feeling and experience that transcend the limits of our everyday experience, leading instead into states of grace not unlike those experienced by religious ecstatics.
Burnett’s most recent work is to be seen as a culmination and a kind of Zen map, where the viewer might also find figures like his co-exhibitor Deborah Bell’s near namesake, Debre.
Those interested are invited to join in the exhibition’s opening on Thurday.
