The National Children’s Theatre (NCT) is ready to welcome back little theatregoers to experience family theatre completely re-imagined with Disney in the Park. So bring a picnic blanket and enjoy brilliant entertainment at NCT’s brand new open-air theatre.
Disney has captured the imagination and hearts of people of all ages. Come and hear how Disney’s incredible legacy was crafted. How an ordinary young man and his little pencil drawing of a mouse in 1928 changed the world forever.
This mini version of the mega-touring, critically acclaimed production of The Man & The Mouse, includes music and songs from the likes of Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, Tangled, Moana and Frozen; re-imagining them into an intimate showcase of classic Disney magic.
The National Children’s Theatre brings magic and life to family favourite stories in a unique and special way. NCT not only does interactive musicals, plays but also theatre workshops for children 7 -17. Their life-skills programmes and educational theatre work with young adults.
NCT began as the non-profit Johannesburg Youth Theatre Trust but since 1990, Executive Director, Joyce Levinsohn, had transformed it into NCT. The theatre is situated on all major bus and taxi routes and as a result, it provides all of Gauteng’s children, irrespective of socio-economic circumstances, with an easily accessible theatre environment.
NCT stage adaptions include a vast variety of children’s classics, contemporary plays as well as teaching vital interactive life-skills through theatre-in-education programmes and theatre workshops. The stories they tell include loved characters, beautiful and creative settings and outstanding costumes that are magical to South African children and parents alike.
NCT has won many awards. Their awards are not only bringing professional educational theatre to children, performing at schools, community centres, theatres, in cities and rural areas across all provinces but at the same time employing young actors and technicians, giving them their first opportunity of professional work.
Since the onset of COVID-19 and the national lockdown, all theatre shows have consequently stopped. As a result, the NCT has started a beautiful outdoor theatre on their grounds. Children are able to come with their parents or caregivers and sit on the grass in designated safe areas. For that reason, the theatre is in need of funds towards keeping the theatre alive.
