EYETHU LIFESTYLE CENTRE
Eyethu Lifestyle Centre is located in the heart of Soweto, a cosmopolitan township that is home to around 2.5 million people and renowned for its cultural treasures. Meaning “our own”, “Eyethu” is a reference to the first black-owned cinema that opened in the area in 1969. Beyond screening films that were banned by the former apartheid government, the cinema became a hotspot for local and international entertainment, hosting early performances by now well-renowned artists such as Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as international performers such as Percy Sledge, Brook Benton and Timmy Thomas. To honour this history, founder of Eyethu Lifestyle Centre, Mandla Tshabalala, has created a multipurpose space to support local creatives who “are active about developing and recognising ‘our own’”. With an in-house art gallery, wine cellar and covered outside deck as well as conference, kitchen, stage and sound facilities, the venue is suitable for a variety of occasions, such as private receptions, corporate events, year-end functions, seminars, fashion shows, graduation ceremonies, training sessions, baby showers and conferences.
