Award-winning jazz musician, McCoy Mrubata, celebrates his 60th birthday and 30 years as a recording artist in a concert at the Market Theatre.
McCoy was born in Cape Town where he grew up with the sounds of African music and played the flute. He studied informally under Langa township greats like Madoda Gxabeka, Winston Ngozi, the Ngcukana’s – Ezra & Duke, Blackie Tempi and Robert Sithole. By the 1980’s he was playing cover bands like Fever, Touch, Airbone and Vukani. In 1987 he was spotted by Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse who helped him make Johannesburg his music home. He has produced successful albums one after another over the last 30 years.
This one-night-only performance is a re-union repertoire of fifteen musicians that McCoy has worked with during his illustrious career. McCoy features some of his favourite musicians, the likes of Prince Lengoasa, Mandisa Dlanga, Paul Hanmer, Jabu Magubane, Lex Futshane and young musicians like Titi Luzipho, Luyanda Madope and Elizabeth Gaylord.
