The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra presents the first concert in their Spring Season. The performance is conducted by Wolfram Christ and soloists are Linda Nteleza and Njabulo Mthimkhulu. For this concert only, the JPO performs with the KZNPO.
The programme consists of George Gershwin: Porgy and Bess Symphonic Picture, George Gershwin: Summer Time from Porgy and Bess, George Gershwin: Bess, You Is My Woman from Porgy and Bess and Gustav Mahler: Symphony no1 in D major Titan.
Wolfram Christ, long-time first Principal Viola with the Berlin Philharmonic, Principal Viola of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Professor at Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, has become highly regarded as a conductor epitomising sincerity and musical integrity. He has worked with multiple orchestras across five continents.
Linda Nteleza (soprano) comes from Khayelitsha in Cape Town. She is a postgraduate of the UCT Opera school and is a member of the Cape Town Opera studio. In 2013 she was a finalist in the prestigious Belvedere Singing Competition in Dusseldorf. She has an extensive operatic experience and has appeared in opera theatres in cities around the world, including Madrid, Tianjin, New York and Cape Town.
Njabulo Mthimkhulu (bass), grew up in Kwa-Mashu in KwaZulu-Natal. He graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Post Graduate Diploma in Opera and the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with Masters in Music Performance. He went on to the Dallas Opera Young Artist Program, where he sang for three years.
The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra is widely regarded as Africa’s premier orchestra. Consisting of 70 full time professional musicians who come from more than 20 countries, the orchestra has, over the past 30 years, earned a reputation for excellence and innovation amongst South African orchestras. A strong vision of high artistic values combined with a comprehensive education and community engagement programme has been fostered by Mr Bongani Tembe, a Julliard School graduate.
