Joburg Ballet opens its 2019 season with a new production of The Sleeping Beauty.
Set to Tchaikovsky’s sweeping romantic score, played live by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the story follows Princess Aurora, who pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep for 100 years.
The production is staged for the company by former British ballerina Maina Gielgud, who became artistic director of The Australian Ballet followed by The Royal Danish Ballet.
Joburg Ballet is joined by Anaïs Chalendard, principal dancer with Boston Ballet, and Florimond Lorieux, soloist with Paris Opera Ballet, for several performances during the season. Full performance casting is set to be announced at a later date.
