South African International Ballet Competition

13 to 18 July 2020

For its 7th iteration, the South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) announces a pivot to an online platform.

Previously scheduled to take place at the Artscape Opera House, the competition has taken a leap into the online space and is now going happening virtually. Going virtual sees the competitions reach expand as dancers, teachers and ballet fans from every corner of the globe are able to connect it via the web.

The SAIBC is the only international ballet competition on the African continent, on par with similar contests held annually throughout the world and highly regarded. Historically, the week-long event would attract between fifty to eighty talented dancers and their support teams from almost every continent to the Mother City to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals and substantial monetary prizes.

For the SAIBC Online, ages and categories for participants will remain the same: Scholars (12 to 15 years), Juniors (16 to 20 years) and Seniors (21 to 28 years) with men and women competing separately. The competition panel awards the top prize in each category by an evaluation process as opposed to the usual scoring system, in light of the impact of Corona around the globe, denying access for many to dance studios.

SAIBC Online subscribers are also able to access the daily online master classes, live panel discussions and feedback after the competition rounds and the virtual Gala in min-July where guest artists from around the world will perform for the finale performance.

Dirk Badenhorst, Founding CEO and Director of Mzansi Ballet, says of the switch, “Being online has also taken the pressure off many who may have found it difficult during these trying times to raise the necessary funds for travel and accommodation expenses. An additional exciting component to the SAIBC Online will be the introduction of our own App, details about which will be released.”
