The Lion and The Lamb, the successful musical play originally created by John Kani and Barney Simon, comes back after a decade to open the festive season at the Market Theatre.
John Kani reprises his leading role in a performance that tells the bible-based story of the life of Jesus Christ. The narrative is accompanied by a collage of traditional gospel songs and songs from the International Gospel Songbook. Songs that are familiar to churchgoers and that celebrate the musical prowess of South Africa accompany and underscore the stories from the parables.
For the first time, multi award winning director, James Ngcobo directs John Kani in his role as the main narrator. Jazz and gospel musician Nokukhanya Dlamini, who was part of the original production, comes back in her role as lead singer.
Nokukhanya Dlamini, Gugu Shezi and Nomfundo Dlamini support Kani in his role. Additionally, Lerato Gwebu, Lerato Mvelase, Itumeleng Tshabane, and guitarist Avril Mkansi are backed by a four piece band, directed by renowned musician Tshepo Mngoma.
