Earth Hour

Outdoor movie night for Earth Day in a botanical garden

There’s nothing quite like a film under the stars in the evening cool of the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. WWF South Africa will be hosting a special cinema experience in one of South Africa’s most beautiful botanical gardens in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the City of Johannesburg.

The classic animation, Wall-E, will be screened and boasts a powerful environmental message for kids and grown-ups. Settle back with friends and family for a movie and BYO evening picnic, or let one of the food trucks take care of the nibbles for you. Guests are also welcome to bring their own chairs and backrests along for a comfy screening.

Join for this Human Rights Walk from Constitution Hill

The We, the People Walk is a platform for collective reflection, dialogue, and commitment to the continued values of South Africa’s Constitutional Democracy, particularly centred around the protection and promotion of human rights. 

The symbolic 5 km walk hopes for unity among diverse sectors of society, ignite meaningful conversations about the challenges and triumphs of the past two decades and inspire collaborative action towards a more just and inclusive future. A range of activities and discussions run throughout the day.

See the most important play in local theatre right now

Can a few minutes of bad judgment online ruin a life? Expelled is a play about social media’s power to connect and its power to destroy.

The family drama focuses on the largely ungoverned world of social media. Alex Bolton is a Matric pupil at an elite school who gets caught up in a viral scandal and is suspended. Once shared, lives alter in seconds, what’s seen cannot be unseen and the ramifications for his family are profound.

Secret Sunrise JHB heads to the forest for a pop-up wellness event

For the ‘Enchanted Forest Fiesta – Rise and Shine Edition’ of Secret Sunrise JHB, you’ll dance among the trees and let your spirit soar with our uplifting sunrise beats. Embrace your inner magic by dressing up as fairies, elves, unicorns, or your favourite woodland creature.

Participants are given headsets and are guided by facilitators through an experience that incorporates meditation and dance. All ages, genders, and fitness levels are welcome and attendees are urged to bring along water.

Daily creative activities and play for kids at Clearwater Mall’s Craft Cafe

The Craft Cafe at Clearwater Mall is one of the biggest family-friendly Easter events in Johannesburg not to be missed. Head to their Rochester Court for fun and exciting ways for kids to get creative and play to their heart’s content.

There are 5 set workshops running daily at various times. The centre is also hosting a special space for kids to play during sessions, and try multiple workshops throughout the day. All materials and tools needed are included in the rates, and kids can take home their finished creations.

Market, Live Music and Museum visits for the Creative Native Vintage Motor Show & Picnic

As part of International Museum Week, the James Hall Museum of Transport is running the Creative Native Vintage Motor Show and Picnic on Saturday, 23 March. This cultural event is a curated outdoor vintage motor show with private collections, artefacts, and memorabilia in a curated exhibition of both classic and vintage vehicles. 

A vintage craft market, live music entertainment and, to keep up with the theme of the day, vintage food trucks will be selling food and refreshments to visitors. Visitors are welcome to take their picnic blankets, cushions, and chairs along and enjoy the activities of the day in a relaxed environment.

Hop on for this bus tour through Soweto and Pimville

A buzzy fashion and food market + a vintage car show

On Thursday, 21 March 2024, Pretoria’s Vintage & Decor Show is hosting another outdoor pop-up event in the relaxed surrounds of Groenkloof, Pretoria. Take the friends and family along and browse vintage jewellery and fashion looks in great condition from a range of vendors. Homemakers are also in luck with precious furniture, porcelain, crafted goods, and other nifty finds at the market at the Old Boys Club.

The car collection is steeped in history, one-off prototypes, and cars that dreams are made of. Think classic and vintage rides, hot rods, custom-made cars and motorcycles.

Cost: R10pp at the gate, kids under 10 enter FREE. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome at the venue
