Joburg Ballet is running a jam-packed weekend programme with Ballet and Beyond, a showcase of three world premieres and one SA premiere.

From Friday to Sunday, a quartet of ballet productions will run twice a day with fewer seats to ensure social distancing protocols. The lineup for each slot includes the first SA performances of highlights from Laurencia, a 1939 Soviet-era Russian classic, as well as two new ballets, The Silent Wanderer and I Am Woman, commissioned from aspiring Joburg Ballet choreographers Mario Gaglione and Craig Pedro, and a world premiere, Grey, by Corey Baker, international award-winning choreographer celebrated for his innovation and commitment to driving dance into the 21st century.

And to top it all off, the ever-popular Rocco de Villiers known for his bold showmanship will perform live piano music to accompany the ballets. This will include excerpts from his newly-composed dance score, One Foot in Front of the Other, offering a glimpse into music that will be used in its entirety in a later Joburg Ballet season.

Indaba Hotel’s Epsom Restaurant in Fourways is hosting a lazy family-style Sunday brunch with a live Jazz band setting the mood.

The menu includes a full English breakfast buffet with all the faves we’ve learned to love, an Oyster Bar and Robertson Winery bubbly. The offer includes one glass of Roberston sparkling wine per person.

Live entertainment comes courtesy of  Rike on Sax. Frontwoman Rike Coetzer started her music education at age six, playing the piano and later the oboe and performed in various youth orchestras during her school years. At the age of nineteen, she was introduced to the alto saxophone and decided to make it her main instrument.

Epsom Restaurant is a firm favourite for a meal guaranteed to meet even the most demanding gourmet’s exacting standards. The restaurant runs regular buffet breakfast and lunch spreads and a range of indigenous and international fare are to be found on the menu.

The Anton Smit Sculpture Park, a unique outdoor exhibition which is a short 40-minute drive from Pretoria and 1-hour from Joburg. Artist Anton Smit developed the garden as a destination of creativity to court visiting tourists and art lovers and collectors both locally and internationally.

The Sculpture Park’s three-hectare grounds are situated on the northern side of the Bronkhorstspruit Dam overlooking the water. Amongst the backdrop of natural stone, formations, manicured lawns and succulent gardens, the garden provides a lovely environment to view the expansive collection of monumental sculptures and exhibitions, it includes Art Café, a coffee shop.

Smit’s work has been exhibited and lauded internationally in places as diverse as Rome and Milan, Italy (1991), the Sweeguan Art Gallery in Singapore (1993), Bonn and Wolfsburg in Germany (1994), the SA Embassy in Bonn (1998), Amsterdam (2004) and Cologne (2014).
