The Roodepoort Theatre transforms into a living archive of South African musical history with the ‘Legends Live On’ tribute concert, taking centre stage on Thursday, 26 March 2026. This music special is set to honour David Mabaso, the last remaining living legend and bass player from the iconic band, Brenda & The Big Dudes.

A standing ovation for the soundtrack of a generation
Produced by Jacky Carpede, together with Lebohang Pangwa and Michael Phillips as Musical Director, ‘Legends Live On’ has been reimagined into a powerful two-set performance. The evening begins with an intimate look into the legacy of David Mabaso who is also fondly known as “Mr Weekend Special”, a nickname he received for his renowned bass groove on the iconic song.
The concert is designed as a catalyst to bridge the gap between history and present day. “This concert will honour their immense contribution and ensure that their story is archived for generations to come,” notes Carpede.
The legend of David Mabaso and Brenda & The Big Dudes
Famously known for their era-defining work with Brenda Fassie, Brenda & The Big Dudes laid the foundation for South African Pop music. This group’s artistry truly provided the soundtrack for a generation across divides during the late 70s and 80s.
As the last remaining member of the group responsible for one of South Africa’s biggest hits in ‘Weekend Special’ and frequent supporting bassist for Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Mabaso is a prevailing force of a defining period in South African music.
