Following a successful sold-out run earlier this 2026, Joburg Theatre’s An Ode to Motown musical is making a return to the Nelson Mandela stage from 1 to 13 September 2026. Celebrate the sonic legacy of the iconic Motown Records with an incredibly talented cast of local performing talents.

An Ode to Motown is a vibrant theatrical experience that takes audiences on a journey through the songs, stories and cultural impact of one of the most influential music movements in history, responsible for introducing the world to icons such as Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & the Supremes and Gladys Knight & The Pips as well as current chart-toppers Cardi B, Lil Baby, Gunna, Smino and more.
Featuring beloved Motown classics and soul-stirring performances, the production celebrates themes of love, hope, resilience and triumph through music that continues to resonate across generations.

The team behind Motown
An Ode to Motown is directed by James Ngcobo, with choreography by Lulu Mlangeni and musical direction by Margaret Motsage. The production is brought to life by a stellar live band and an exceptional cast featuring Liesl Penniken, Lerato Mvelase, Tamara Dey, Hlengiwe Pearl and Anele Precious Mthethwa featuring i-complete.
