DECOREX JOBURG

STORM IN A TEACUP

Storm in a Teacup produces unique handcrafted ceramics. Each item begins on the potter’s wheel, a classic artisan technique dating far back in time.

For 10 years, founder Sue Weston and her team have been experimenting with different clay bodies, forms and texture. Recently they have developed their own clay body for extra strength; it has lustrous warmth seeping through the glazes.

The ceramic retailer’s concept store in the design precinct of 44 Stanley specialises in fully functional and durable ceramic design wares. Furthermore, the pottery range is removed from mass production. Through their work, the team aims to reflect the natural vibrancy and beauty of South Africa.

Storm in a teacup will also be launching their Cape Town outpost in the V&A Waterfront’s design marketplace, Watershed on 2 August.

RE-TREND

RE-TREND is a popular store in Richmond that brings you refurbished, one of a kind, Mid-century modern and Retro furniture dating between the 1950’s to 1970’s. This style is versatile, all-inclusive and most of the time, timeless. What sets this furniture apart is the simplicity in design, function and form. The use of clean lines and classic shapes, makes decorating a dream, as the pieces are understatedly gorgeous and not over-designed. Most décor styles incorporate well with mid-century modern. At RE-TREND, the team strives for perfection when furniture is refurbished. Each piece is assessed individually as not one piece is the same and not the same wood is used. Mid-century and retro furniture was often veneered, which makes refurbishment tricky, but in most cases exceptionally well veneered and the craftsmanship involved in these pieces were often more complex and time-consuming than solid wood pieces

WONKI WARE

Wonki Ware produces and sells pottery while making a difference. The small ceramicware retail store in Fourways started off as a small studio in the town of George 20 years ago. Owner Di Marshall kickstarted the studio to keep herself busy, but it soon became a hub for creatives to meet. She trained two locals in the art of pottery and the three became a team. Their enthusiasm for the clay helped the business to expand vastly and the collections are showcased in some of the most prestigious stores in South Africa as well as abroad.

Wonki Ware creates classic pottery, which is timeless and vibrant. Their unique variety of patterns and shapes have positioned them as trendsetters in the market.

The studio gives back to the local George community by teaching the art of pottery making. At present they employ over 70 people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

KAMERS/MAKERS

Another source for decor statement pieces with an artisanal touch is the upcoming KAMERS/Makers market. This seasonal market, in partnership with Consol, celebrates all things fresh and unique- handmade artistry and face-to-face encounters with those who produce it. The idea is that the pieces are not perfect or mass-produced, but rather high-end true craft with an artisanal touch.

From hand-painted clocks to special edition timber bow ties, KAMERS/Makers provides a space for handcrafted creativity to get its time in the limelight.

Look out for one of their various design shows in Gauteng. The first is the Gala Moonlight Market on 27 August at St John’s College in Joburg. Then, their Joburg show runs from 28 August until 1 September at St John’s College. To close off the year, they host a final event at Cornwall Hill College in Pretoria, 3 until 8 December. And a small selection of items are available for online sale throughout the year.
