This Heritage Day, Big Save and Castle Lager are setting the fire alight for a truly historic World’s Biggest Braai event on 24 September 2025. The 130-year-old South African beer brand is bringing the nation together for a record-breaking attempt that celebrates more than just meat and flame. Here’s what you need to know.

How the World’s Biggest Braai works
From 10am on Heritage Day 2025, light your fire and take part in the biggest public braai the world has ever seen. Each registered braaier will receive a portion of wors, fresh rolls, a branded apron to keep, and a pair of tongs on loan to use on the day. Braai slots are limited to 2,500 people and won’t be extended once sold out.
This isn’t just a braai—it’s a record-breaking attempt. South Africa once held the title, but Japan currently claims it. Now, we’re going for three global records: the most people braaing at once (2,220), the largest grilling lesson (336), and the biggest toast both online and in person (1,026). The full event is attempting to host up to 4,000 guests. Join Castle Lager and Big Save to help bring these records home.

South Africa’s vibiest bands on one stage
The World’s Biggest Braai, hosted by Big Save, is more than just a record-breaking cookout—it’s a full-blown festival experience. Kicking off at 12pm, the vibe quickly shifts into celebration mode with a lively programme of entertainment. South African favourites Mi Casa, GoodLuck, Boohle G and Biggie will take to the stage for unmissable live performances.
A festive beer garden will keep the drinks flowing while a range of food trucks serve up delicious bites. Families can look forward to relaxed chill zones and kid-friendly fun spread across the venue. It’s a proudly South African celebration of togetherness, flavour and joy.
The iconic grounds of Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria will set the stage for a lively, family-friendly day that celebrates the amazing legacy and energy of South African togetherness.
Brand Director Thomas Lawrence says, “From national victories to everyday moments, South Africans are showing the world what we’re made of. This record attempt is about sharing pride, fire, and flavour. The World’s Biggest Braai is where we all meet.”
Proceeds will go towards a good cause
The biggest braai is more than a festive celebration—it’s a movement with purpose. This year’s event supports a powerful mission. In 2026, on World Hunger Day, Big Save and the Imbumba Foundation will aim to feed one million people. Every ticket brings us closer to that goal. All proceeds go directly to the Imbumba Foundation, a South African non-profit working to uplift youth through education, empowerment and health.
Their Caring4Girls programme ensures schoolgirls have access to menstrual health support, helping them stay in school with dignity and confidence. Through the inspiring Trek4Mandela initiative, climbers summit Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of Nelson Mandela, raising critical funds and awareness for underprivileged children.
