Cape Ballet Africa Brings a Stunning Production of Swan Lake to Montecasino in August

Cape Ballet Africa and Global Star Events are bringing one of the world’s most beloved ballet productions, Swan Lake, to Joburg stages following their successful, sold-out run of The Nutcracker in December 2025. This classical masterpiece will be on stage at The Teatro, Montecasino from 7 to 21 August 2026.

A timeless tale retold

Swan Lake is the pinnacle of classical ballet, having dazzled audiences for generations, elegantly using motion to tell a story of passion, devotion and betrayal. As with every iteration of the ballet, the Cape Ballet Africa’s production is set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s original composition.

The ballet tells the story of Prince Siegfried, whose heart is captured by Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan by day. Their fates entwine in a powerful struggle against evil, where love must prove stronger than the sorcery that seeks to tear them apart.

Celebrated for their artistic excellence and expressive storytelling, Cape Ballet Africa brings dramatic intensity and
elegance to this cherished classic. Opulent sets, sumptuous costumes, and iconic, enduring choreography combine to create a ballet experience that stirs the soul and leaves you breathless.

Meet the team bringing the production to life

This new production is created and performed by a 50-strong member company, featuring choreography and stage direction by Georgian born, London based former principal ballerina with the English National Ballet, Elena Glurjidze.

For this brand new South African premiere, the exquisite costumes are designed by Marcel Meyer with magnificent sets by Michael Mitchell; the same team that created the grand designs for the double Naledi Award nominated The Nutcracker.

When: Running from 7 to 21 August 2026 | Mondays & Wednesdays to Sundays (No Tuesday shows). Matinees and afternoon shows are on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays at 1pm and 3pm. Wednesday and Thursday shows are at 7pm, and Fridays are at 7.30pm (except 21 August show which is at 3pm
