To celebrate Earth Hour this year, WWF South Africa is hosting a once-off outdoor cinema in Johannesburg for both young and old on Saturday, 22 March. Plus there’s an opportunity to log your contribution to Earth Hour online and stand a chance to win a nature getaway.

Film under the Stars for Earth Day 2025
There’s nothing quite like a film under the stars in the evening cool of the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. WWF South Africa will be hosting a special cinema experience in one of South Africa’s most beautiful botanical gardens in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the City of Johannesburg.
The classic animation, Happy Feet, will be screened and boasts a powerful environmental message for kids and grown-ups. Happy Feet is all about Mumble, a penguin who just doesn’t fit in—because instead of singing like the rest of his kind, he’s got some seriously slick dance moves. But in a world where singing is everything, his dancing makes him an outcast. Determined to prove himself, Mumble embarks on a wild adventure that’s got heart, humour, and a whole lot of toe-tapping fun.
Settle back with friends and family for a movie and BYO evening picnic, or let one of the food trucks take care of the nibbles for you. Guests are also welcome to bring their own chairs and backrests along for a comfy screening.

What is Earth Hour?
Since it’s launch in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has emerged as the world’s largest grassroots environmental campaign and continues to shine the spotlight on issues of climate change, nature loss and the interrelated environmental pressures facing our planet. At its core, Earth Hour’s message is that every one of us has the power to make a positive impact on our planet.
In 2024, supporters in over 190 countries and territories will create the Biggest Hour for Earth, part of WWF’s efforts to turn a single Earth Hour into thousands and millions of hours of action and awareness. In doing so, the world’s largest grassroots environmental campaign will shine
‘The success of Earth Hour has always been its ability to inspire and support individuals to act and advocate for change,’ says Pedzi Gozo, Executive Manager of Strategic Communications at WWF South Africa. ‘Earth Hour shows that with cumulative efforts by governments, businesses and people, we can work together to counteract global biodiversity loss and climate change. We can all make a difference as long as we come together to take action, now more than ever.’
This year, everyone, anywhere is invited to give an hour for Earth doing something they love, based on their lifestyle interests. Whether it’s giving an hour through the realm of food, fitness and wellness, nature, creativity, entertainment, or sustainability, we want people to have fun and help the planet while they’re at it.
