Cape Town Opera is bringing this work of Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential figures in musical theatre, to the stage in a new production.
A Tony Award-winning musical first produced in 1973, the story follows the troubled romantic lives of many couples and is often described as equal parts hilarious and darkly cynical. In turn-of-the-century Sweden, three sets of lovers see their lives intertwine and untangle over the course of a weekend of longing, indecision, and misplaced desire.
This production is directed by Fleur du Cap-winner Fred Abrahamse, alongside costume designer Marcel Meyer, and Portuguese musical director José Dias. The cast includes beloved veteran Aviva Pelham as Madame Armfeldt, internationally recognised actor Jonathan Roxmouth as Fredrik Egerman, and numerous young talents like Mia-Cecilia Kriel and Sisikelelwe Mngenela.
