The Basketball National League returns for the 2026 season, marking the start of another dynamic chapter in the evolution of South Africa’s premier basketball competition.
The 2026 season, running from June to September 2026, brings together the country’s top clubs in both the Men’s Basketball National League (MBNL) and the Women’s Basketball National League (WBNL), each comprising ten teams representing provinces across South Africa.
The competition unfolds as such:
• League rounds (June – August 2026)
• Playoff stages (August 2026)
• Finals and medal ceremonies (early September 2026)
Beyond competition, the BNL is positioning itself as a leading sportainment platform, combining athletic excellence with fan engagement, commercial growth and youth culture.
Since its establishment in 2012 and launch in 2013, the Basketball National League has grown into the highest level of competitive basketball in South Africa, created through a strategic partnership between Basketball South Africa and the government to professionalise the sport.
The league continues to build strategic relationships with global and continental basketball entities, including FIBA, the Basketball Africa League (BAL) and the NBA, positioning South African basketball within the broader international ecosystem.
