Buskaid is a charitable music organisation based in Diepkloof, Soweto working to provide all children with the opportunity to channel their creative energies and enhance their academic abilities through the learning and playing of classical music.
The latest concert features The Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble presenting a programme with some of the most versatile young string musicians in South Africa. Tshidiso and Bongani Boikanyo (brothers) and Koketso & Tshegofatso Mphela (sisters) are cousins, who feature as soloists in Mozart’s youthful Serenata Notturna, which also includes timpani (aka African drum). The focal moment of the concert is Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, featuring Koketso Mphela as cello soloist.
The music of Rameau, Brahms, Sibelius and Elgar is then followed by the musicians’ take on Amapiano and Afropop, featuring songs by Mango Groove, Lira, Jonny Clegg and Freshly Ground.
