Earthquake Museum

Event information

This tragic seismic event recorded a 6.3 reading on the Richter scale. Years later, exhibitions and educational programmes pay homage to residents and showcase a pre-industrialised Tulbagh setting up until the redevelopment of Church Street.

The museum is informative and well laid out, and visitors can read all about this destructive incident and listen to a video airing personal stories and experiences. Newspaper articles, nostalgic photographs and illustrations detail the impact of the earthquake and its aftermath on people’s lives.

The building is a renown iconic attraction, and adds to ambience of the town’s beautifully restored houses.
