Food Systems Walking Tour

The Food Systems Walking Tour in Cape Town offers an immersive journey through the city's rich ecological, historical, and culinary landscapes. Organized by the South African Urban Food & Farming Trust (SAUFFT) and guided by experts, including historian and former head of the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership, Andrew Boraine, this tour reveals how Cape Town's history shapes its modern food system and vice versa.

Participants will explore the dynamic food cultures of Cape Town's urban core, savouring classic street food along the way. The tour begins at Heritage Square and traverses key historical and cultural sites such as Greenmarket Square, the station deck, the Golden Acre, and the Company’s Gardens.

This engaging experience includes food tastings, allowing participants to enjoy a variety of local flavours while learning about the intricate connections between Cape Town's ecological systems, history, and food lineages from pre-colonial times to the present day.

For those interested in understanding the interplay between history and contemporary food practices in Cape Town, this walking tour offers a unique and delicious perspective.
