Heart of Cape Town Museum

The Heart of Cape Town is a museum complex located in the Groote Schuur Hospital. The hospital was founded in 1938, and is an institution renowned for being the site of the first heart transplant. In 1967, Cape Town surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the surgery on the patient, Louis Washkansky.

The museum includes a guided tour of the original operating theatres with a a recreation of the surgery, background history of the surgery, the donor, the recipient and Dr Christiaan Barnard. Booking for these tours is essential.
