Established in 1895, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park is the oldest game park in South Africa along with nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly known as St Lucia Reserve). The Park covers some 96 000 hectares and is characterised by hilly topography. The northern section of the reserve is noted for its wide variety of wildlife, birdlife and flora.

Apart from guided game viewing drives and walksm there are self guided auto trails and Guided walks can be especially rewarding in the early morning and late afternoon. There is also a 40 seater boat on Hluhluwe dam which takes visitors on guided trips twice a day. Visitors interested in Zulu culture can visit the community areas outside the Park.
