Launched in 2012, the Jozi Film Festival was initially established to promote Johannesburg filmmakers and encourage a greater interest in local films. The film festival began accepting international entries in 2014 and has since become a prominent event among Johannesburg residents, especially film and art enthusiasts.
It is a recognisable multi-genre film festival in Johannesburg and usually occurs towards the end of the year, around September or October. Film lovers are treated to a variety of films, including feature films, short films, documentaries and student films screened at a number of venues including The Bioscope. The festival remains independent and wholly dedicated to providing a platform for independent filmmakers.
Entries for the festival are submitted online via FilmFreeway and successful candidates are required to send a link to FilmFreeway to download their film in high resolution, or dispatch the film in a Digital Cinema Package file or as a Blu-ray disc. Contestants may submit more than one film for entry. Trophies are awarded to winning films in each of the festival’s categories. Keep an eye out on their social media platforms and website for announcements on festival and entry dates.
