Kromdraai Gold Mine

A rare glimpse into South Africa’s early mining history, giving visitors the chance to explore one of the oldest known gold mines in Gauteng. Located within the Cradle of Humankind, about 40 minutes from central Johannesburg, the site marks where gold was first discovered in 1881, five years before the gold rush officially began.

Visitors walk through the original tunnels, view the tools once used by miners, and learn how early extraction methods shaped the local economy and the development of Johannesburg as the “City of Gold.”

The experience is suitable for all ages and includes insight into the living and working conditions of 19th-century miners. Situated near the Sterkfontein Caves and other key attractions in the Cradle of Humankind, Kromdraai Gold Mine provides an informative and accessible addition to any visit to the region.
