LEGACY x SSS is the latest edition of LEGACY, Cape Town's ongoing Ballroom event series produced by Edition Events and co-created by Rori Bingham. The series was established as a tribute to the late Kirvan Fortuin, known within the community as Kirvan Le Cap, the dancer, choreographer and LGBTQ+ rights activist who founded the House of Le Cap in 2017, South Africa's first Ballroom house, and was fatally stabbed in a suspected hate crime in June 2020.
Ballroom culture originated in New York in the 1980s within Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities as a response to exclusion, creating a space where participants could compete, be seen, and express identity freely. The South African scene, built significantly on Fortuin's foundation, has developed its own distinct character, including the African Performance category, created by Fortuin, integrating South African genres such as Amapiano, Gqom, and Kwaito with local dance styles, including Pantsula, Gwara Gwara, and Vosho.
The June edition marks a collaboration between LEGACY and SSS, structured around the Ball itself, in which participants "walk" competitive categories before a judging panel. The event is open to all: walkers competing in categories, spectators, and those attending the surrounding party.
A coat check is available at the entrance. The event is no U18s and no outside alcohol is permitted.
