The monthly Liesbeek River clean-up is an Observatory Community Project which encourages volunteers to lend a hand to remove litter from the banks of the river and pathways in the area. This project is known as T.R.A.S.H [Taking Rubbish Away, Saving Habitat] and operates under the auspices of the Friends of the Liesbeek (FOL).
Volunteers can drop in at any time for an hour or two to help. Trash bags and litter-pickers are provided but volunteers and members are encouraged to bring gloves, sanitizer, hats, water, sunscreen, and boots if it's a wet day.
This project has been running since 2013 and aims to improve the green space and reduce the amount of rubbish entering the waterways, which causes pollution of one of Cape Town’s valuable fresh-water arteries.
The volunteer co-ordinators raise funds annually through a sponsored give-away to fund wages for members of the FOL Maintenance Team who do the heavy-lifting and make sure the area is cleaned thoroughly once a month, even if volunteer-numbers are low.
If you would like to sign up for the monthly email communications, or donate prizes for the fund-raiser, or would like to make a contribution towards keeping this project running, please contact the organisers on [email protected].
